The island of Lefkas

The Greek island of Lefkas is situated at the same latitude as the Algarve, Southern Spain and Sicily. The most attractive months are May, June, July, September and October. August is the hottest and most touristic month. The beaches on Lefkas rank among the most beautiful ones in Greece and the water is exceptionally clean.

Lefkas is hardly developed as far as tourism is concerned. The island is easily accessible: you can get direct flights from European cities to Preveza most of the year. Lefkas, which is connected to the mainland by a bridge and causeway, is a 20-minute drive from the airport. You can also fly to Athens , after which you have about a five-hour drive by car or coach to Lefkas. Flying from Athens to Preveza is another option.

Lefkas is a large island (325 km²) where nature still rules life. The southern coast is exceptionally beautiful and quiet. It’s a delightful mixture of mountains, bays, beaches and charming villages. The sea is clean and crystal clear. The vistas of the neighbouring islands are magnificent. The capital of the island, also named Lefkas or Lefkada, has charming streets and squares. The inland is characterized by mountains and valleys, with villages where people still live by the rhythm of seasons and harvests. A feeling of authenticity and tradition prevails.

Climate

The Lefkadian climate is delightful. There is a sufficient amount of rain, especially in the winter, spring and autumn, to keep the island looking lush and green. As a rule, the summers are pleasantly warm and dry. A few weeks in July and August are rather hot but this can not be compared to similar temperatures in Western Europe. The Lefkas climate is less oppressive. The afternoons are usually tempered by a refreshing breeze from the sea, and summer temperature in July and August are mostly 30 to 35˚C. In June and September, temperatures are normally 25 to 30˚C. Temperatures in May and October tend to be around 25˚C. At the end of October, the sea water is still pleasantly warm and invites swimming. In April and November, daytime temperatures often reach 20˚C and higher. Even December can have quite a few sunny days with a daytime temperature of 20˚C. Climate-wise, January and February are the least attractive months on Lefkas. In those months it can be cold and rainy but also warm and sunny with mid-day temperatures of 15˚C and even higher in the sun.
